I’m a journalist who has reported from some of the world’s most interesting places, including my home city of San Francisco.
Earlier in my career I was a foreign correspondent and a criminal justice and political reporter for The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times. I also covered foreign investment and economic affairs for The Wall Street Journal.
Eventually, I consulted for international development organizations like the United Nations USAID in the Middle East and Asia on governance projects, often in places I had previously worked as a journalist.
I returned to California during the Covid pandemic and reported on energy markets, health policy, and technology, and then became a strategic communications executive at Amazon.
I created this podcast to bring together the different strands of my career – media, international policy, technology and culture – and to have discussions with interesting people outside of the constraints of corporate news media.
This is my attempt to create a community of people who want to know more about how the world works, or doesn’t work. Mostly, I just enjoy asking questions and seeing where they lead.
